Compresso Support

Compresso frees up storage by compressing the photos and videos you already have, instead of asking you to delete them.

Getting started

Your library is grouped by month, so you never face all of it at once. Open a month and swipe each item:

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my original when I compress a photo?

Nothing, at first. Compresso saves the compressed copy as a new item and leaves your original alone, so you can compare them side by side. The original is only removed when you explicitly choose to replace it — and even then it goes to Recently Deleted, where iOS keeps it for about 30 days.

I compressed a lot, but my iPhone storage hasn't changed. Why?

Almost always because the originals are still sitting in Recently Deleted. iOS holds them there for about 30 days before actually reclaiming the space. To get it back immediately, open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted and empty it. On iOS 26 that album lives under Collections → Utilities and is protected by Face ID.

I deleted something by accident. Can I get it back?

Yes — Compresso never bypasses the system. Deleted items go to Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted and can be recovered from there for about 30 days.

Some of my photos and videos refuse to compress. Is that a bug?

No — that is deliberate. Certain capture formats carry data beyond the plain image or video, and re-encoding them would silently throw it away. Compresso leaves these untouched rather than damage them: RAW and ProRAW, Portrait photos (they carry a depth map), Cinematic video, spatial photos and video, slow-motion, time-lapse, and animated GIFs. The card tells you which format it detected.

Does the quality drop?

Compression is lossy, so there is a change — the question is whether you can see it. You pick the level (three are available for both photos and videos), and you can compare the original and the compressed copy side by side before deciding to replace anything.

Why does the app need full Photo Library access?

To read your library, save the compressed copy back into it, and delete items when you ask. With limited access it can only see the handful of items you picked, which makes reviewing a library by month impossible.

Do my photos get uploaded anywhere?

No. All compression happens on your device. There is no account, no sign-in, and no server of ours that your media could be sent to. See the privacy policy.

The app promised more space than I ended up freeing.

The figure before you start is an estimate of what could be reclaimed at the level you picked. What you actually free depends on each file — an item that is already efficiently encoded has little left to give, and Compresso will skip it rather than make it bigger. The total shown after a run is the measured result, not the estimate.

I bought Pro but it isn't showing up.

Tap Restore Purchases on the upgrade screen, and check you are signed in with the same Apple Account you purchased with. If it still doesn't appear, email us — include the Apple Account region and roughly when you purchased.

How do I cancel a subscription?

On your device: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Compresso. Cancelling stops future renewals; Pro stays active until the period you paid for ends.

Will Compresso clear "System Data" or app caches?

No, and no photo tool can. Compresso reclaims space taken by photos and videos only. If your storage is full of something else, Settings → General → iPhone Storage will show you what.
